Gregory M. O'Brien reportedly founded the Tau Alpha Kappa fraternity on February 9, 1963. Later in November, 1967 the fraternity became an affiliate of the Tau Epsilon Phi, national fraternity. On joining the national fraternity Tau Alpha Kappa became the Tau Alpha Chapter of Tau Epsilon Phi.
Since its inception the TAK chapter has played a vibrant role in the local community of lehigh University.
In 1981 a group women, who were closely associated with several of the fraternity brothers at Tau Epsilon Phi, created the little sisters program. The group became known as Alpha Sigma Kappa (e.g., ASK).
